SIT Hackathon 2022: Sustainability in Space Final

8 June 2022 – The Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), Science Centre Singapore and NEO Aeronautics Pte Ltd successfully concluded the inaugural edition of ‘The SIT Hackathon 2022: Sustainability in Space’. 
Themed ‘How to Live in Space for 365 Days’, the Hackathon saw participating students from SIT proposing innovative solutions related to 3D printing technologies that can be used in space. From January 2022 to June 2022, six teams submitted their product proposals and were given a budget of $500 to produce their prototype. Four teams progressed to the Grand Final.
Associate Professor Lim Tit Ming, Chief Executive, Science Centre Singapore said, “Hackathons are a great way to strengthen connections, facilitate fruitful exchanges and stimulate creativity. It’s always inspiring to see the younger generation come together to co-create ideas. In this sense, we see hackathons not just as opportunities to generate solutions but to accelerate innovation. That sense of curiosity, enthusiasm and passion among the teams is what we aim to foster. The hackathon also demonstrates the importance of bringing like-minded partners together to create nurturing spaces. All these small steps can lead to giant leaps in overcoming the complex challenges before us.”

Singapore's Changi Airport to have giant Terminal 5

Construction of T5 is scheduled to begin in the next two years, and the reopening will take place in the mid-2030s.
Singapore, like much of the Southeast Asian tourism market, has been particularly hard hit by restrictions during the pandemic. On the other hand, this two-year hiatus actually provided the developers with an opportunity to take a step back and improve the details of the $10 billion project. For example, the design of the T5 will become “more modular and flexible.”
Situated on a site of more than 1,000 hectares, the T5 will provide three additional runways and a tunnel system. There will also be more than 100 additional boarding gates. This should help manage the expected 135 million passengers a year in the 2030s. For comparison, in 2019, the airport's passenger traffic amounted to 68 million passengers.

India hosted ASEAN foreign ministers on June 15-17

A meeting of 10 foreign ministers of Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member states was held in India on June 15-17. The meeting was focused on the Indo-Pacific Economic Initiative, maritime security, digital economy, investment, trade and health cooperation.
The meeting was attended by the foreign ministers of Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
Alongside the ministerial meeting, the India-ASEAN annual conference was held in New Delhi. It was devoted to the 30th anniversary of the India-ASEAN partnership as well as the 10th anniversary of India's strategic partnership with the organisation. Moreover, 2022 has been declared the year of friendship with ASEAN in India.

Sentosa, RWS to install solar panels at 18 locations as part of carbon neutrality efforts

Sentosa and Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) are embarking on a large-scale deployment of solar panels to harness energy across the island from this month, as part of its efforts to go carbon neutral by 2030.
The panels will be installed at a new batch of 18 sites, including Palawan Kidz City, Beach Station, Universal Studios Singapore and Hard Rock Hotel, said Sentosa Development Corporation (SDC) on Wednesday (Jun 15). This marks the first major renewable energy milestone under the refreshed Sustainable Sentosa roadmap, which was launched in September last year.
Under this, Sentosa has committed to becoming a carbon neutral destination by 2030 and a “globally recognised, certified sustainable tourism destination”. It is also studying other sources of renewable energy, such as tidal energy and waste-to-energy generators, as part of its long-term strategies.

Singapore wrap up Asian Cup qualifying campaign with 6-2 thumping of Myanmar

With only pride to play for in the final match of their 2023 AFC Asian Cup qualifying campaign on Tuesday (Jun 14), Singapore recorded an emphatic 6-2 victory against Myanmar on the back of Ikhsan Fandi’s first international hat-trick.
Ikhsan wasted little time at the Dolen Omurzakov Stadium in Bishkek as he put Singapore ahead in the ninth minute with a bullet header off a Gabriel Quak cross. Song Ui-young then put Takayuki Nishigaya’s side 2-0 up seven minutes later with a low shot from well outside the box that sneaked into the Myanmar goal off the post.
Hafiz Nor rounded out the scoring with a well-struck volley off a Nur Adam cross in the 89th minute to ensure that Singapore’s adventure in the Kyrgyz capital concluded with three points.
